Below are areas we use as a guideline to collect our experiences in working together. The form is for your use (notes) and is not collected.

Working with the Children
- General Health and Well-Being: children want to be carried, diapers may need changing, children cry… Working alone as staff-person can be physically demanding, and stressful at times. Do you have any concerning experiences, any reflections about the daily Kinderschule work vis-a-vis physical and/or mental health?

- German and English Language Use: ideally, Kinderschule staff can communicate fluently in German as well as English. We want to encourage the development of German language ability in the children, which can be helped by repetition, games, and songs, etc. How does communicating with two languages in the classroom work for you?

- __________________________________________________________________________________________________Relationships with Children: we want the Kinderschule children to grow to trust the staff, and feel recognized and understood by them. How do you experience developing this kind of connection with each child? Are there children with whom your connection is special or different or difficult?

- Guiding Children: Kinderschule staff should come to know the developmental stage of each child, and have expectations that guide the child in his or her development and foster his or her independence. Staff should also assess for developmental delays, and talk to parents twice each year about each child’s development. All this requires some knowledge and some attention to detail about each child’s progression. How have you found this aspect of your work?

- Classroom Management: many issues arise with the children around conflict and safety. It is important to stay calm and be the consistent and sure authority figure in this regard. Ideally, we help children to develop empathy and independence, and develop real friendships, even while they experience the inevitable challenges. Do you have special situations or complicated social dynamics? Have issues arise with specific children such as disregarding direct requests, or continuing with dangerous actions?

Preparation of the Kinderschule Space
- Setting up of the Classroom: Ideally the design of the classroom set-up is a collaboration between all staff members. Are you productively involved? The room should be beautiful and inviting, with items within reach of the children, and toys and structures that challenge the children while allowing for their imagination to imbue the activity. Do you have specific experiences about the set-up and/or clean-up situation in the classrooms, or have ideas for future development of the Kinderschule space arrangements?

- Activity Planning: The daily Kinderschule activity is largely free-play, anchored by crafts and the routines of circle time and gym games. Do you have the experience of a balanced program for your diversity of children in these areas? Have you brought new games/crafts/songs/etc., or have sources for finding new enlivening ideas? Do you have strategies to help with children who don’t fully participate?

- Time Management: Kinderschule can be demanding, particularly around the festivals. How does it fit in your life with aspects such as arriving punctually, fitting in the work and clean-up each day, and the extra work on excursions and festivals? Do your paid hours reflect what you work?

Other: Professionalism, Collaboration, Development
- Professionalism: there are some very important aspects of working with the families of Kinderschule. Staff must always respect confidentiality of the children and of the families. Staff must also interact with parents with positivity, and show empathy and understanding for their child. At times, it can be difficult to deal with a parent and remain professional. Dealing with the MELCC and representing Kinderschule at events also requires professionalism. Any reflections/experiences in this regard? Have you had any interpersonal conflicts/stresses connected with Kinderschule?

- Collaboration: While the current program has staff working alone, there is mutual benefit in having the same approach to working with the children. How is this working for you? - Initiative to Enrich Kinderschule: Each staff person should participate in continuing education opportunities so that he or she can improve and enlarge his / her knowledge. Have any discipline issues arisen for you? How do you see your participation in scheduled Kinderschule Board meetings, festivals and events?
