Language Lessons

Caregivers repeat particular words and phrases in their natural context (colours of paint, cleaning up tasks, etc.), and all children quickly learn meanings within our centre’s context. Caregivers also encourage the children to speak some words of German as opportunity provides. Such instances occur all throughout the day, in particular in these times:
A whole-language approach is used, keeping words in a natural grammatical context rather than isolating vocabulary. We will practice words we know in circle times, in the context of games.
Additionally, there is a lending library with 700+ books for families to borrow as resources.
Caregivers use English to guide play scenarios or provide parallels to the German language used.
It is also used by Caregivers to address children on such topics as safety regulations (fire drill, hand-washing procedure, rules of safe play), emergencies, or for other immediate interventions.
- during snack time
- for all songs, including transition songs and curricular songs
- in the planned circle time activities such as games and poems
- in caregiver interactions during crafting activities
- in caregiver interactions in the free play times
- in caregiver interactions during transition like clean-up or snack set-up.
